About Newfield Colliery

A 5ha nature reserve on site of former Newfield Colliery in the Ashby Woulds. The Friends of Newfield Colliery, a local conservation group, manages the site, favouring the regenerating heather by removing birch seedlings as they appear.

Natural regeneration of heathland and woodland over 150 years has created one of the largest areas of acid grassland in the surrounding area. Newfield Colliery is typical of the kind of habitat which can forn naturally on colliery spoil. The flooded pools are rich in wildlife and plantlife, including Sphagnum moss, and are a popular fishing spot.

Please note: There are disused mine shafts in the area - take care.
