About Development Officer x 2 Posts (Active Medicine) & (Active Places) Focus

This is an exciting opportunity for two Development Officers who would like to support us to work with communities, organisations and partners to deliver our Physical Activity Framework and support our vision of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland: a place where physical activity is part of daily life, leading to people living healthier and happier lives.

Fixed Term: 12 Months, subject to annual funding.

Active Together (formerly Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport) is a partnership organisation working to help communities in Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland get moving a little more.

Post 1: Active Medicine

National guidelines advise that physical activity promotion for inactive people with a range of long term conditions and physical activity brief advice in healthcare is one of the top seven 'best buys' for getting a population active. This post will support us to focus n increasing opportunities to embed physical activity advice and guidance into health care settings and amongst health care professionals, to both increase activity levels and improve the health and wellbeing of our residents.

Examples of projects (although not a definitive list):

  • Developing a targeted approach to raise physical activity in low participating groups and settings.
  • Raise awareness of the health and wellbeing benefits of physical activity to health professionals/settings and communities.
  • Supporting health care professionals and health groups to embed physical activity into their settings/programmes/policies and have active conversations with patients (eg. work with GP Surgeries, Patient Participation Groups, Pharmacies).
  • Support the development and delivery of relevant local and national physical activity campaigns/programmes to reduce inactivity and increase participation (with a focus on active medicine related campaigns/projects and landing these in health care settings eg. Pharmacies, GP Surgeries).
  • Encouraging everyone to embed regular, informal physical activity opportunities into their daily lives.

Post 2: Active Places

A critical part of improving the health and wellbeing of our local population is to ensure our built environment, spaces and places are designed and developed in a way that encourages residents and communities to be physically active. For the future it's crucial that the design of our streets, neighbourhoods, town centres and residential developments improves walking, cycling outdoor recreation and access to places for active use.

This exciting new role will lead our strategic healthy place making priority and work programme. Working across Leicestershire, Leicester City and Rutland you will support and influence the future design of our local built spaces and places, enabling people to have a greater choice in how they are physically active in the places they live, work and play.

You'll work in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders including planners, designers, and developers, to integrate active design principles into policies and working practice and local developments. The work will tackle barriers to active travel, promoting design considerations and incentives to improve community access to open spaces and facilities, enabling better local access to sport and physical activity provision. You'll also support our partners with the design and development of local relevant strategies for sports facilities, playing pitches and open space.

For this role you'll be passionate about building physical activity and health into the design of our future built environment, as well as appreciate the importance that schools, sports facilities, community buildings, parks and open spaces play in the health of our population. You may have specialist knowledge from either sports facility management, town/transport planning, landscape architecture or urban design.
