Run Leader forum inspires Mental Health Ambassadors

Running Activator Kim Angell told of her pride after running a hugely successful Run Leader forum focused on mental health.

Held in Leicestershire, the evening saw 19 Run Leaders leave inspired after a talk and workshop provided the opportunity for all to be provided with a new way of thinking. With #RunAndTalk sessions throughout this week, it was on the agenda for those in attendance. Run and Talk week is designed to increase awareness for mental health and to get people talking as they exercise.

Speaking after the event, Angell said: "All in all I am really pleased with how the whole evening went and the positive feedback we have received from the Run leaders. It was well worth putting the workshop on and it linked in so well with the #runandtalk campaign which is on at the moment."

The evening also saw Angell give a talk at the start of the night on the England Athletics Mental Health Ambassador role. That proved beneficial, with six clubs and groups registering their interest to take on potential roles. There was also promising news from The Squirrel's running group, who registered a #runandtalk session following the evening.

The #runandtalk campaign aims to improve mental health through running in England by:

  • getting people talking about mental health, sharing their experiences and removing stigma
  • raising awareness of mental health problems
  • supporting people experiencing mental health problems to be physically active through running, whether that is to support them in starting, returning to or continuing to run
