Broom Leys Battle it out for Five-A-Side Victory

On the 28th March, 10 teams from workplaces across Leicestershire headed to Goals in Leicester for the next event in our Workplace Challenge competition programme, 5-a-side football. After rain threatened to put a dampener on the competition, the group stages kicked off promptly at 6.15pm with 12 minute games following the 5-a-side rules.

Division 1 saw experienced play from University of Leicester and Voluntary Action Leicestershire, claiming their places in the semi-finals. Sterling efforts were seen from North West Leicestershire School Sport Partnership, previous runners up at 'Victorious' Volleyball back in January.

In Division 2, Harborough District Council made their WPC competition debut for this year, and held their own throughout the group stages but it wasn't enough in a tough field of teams, losing their first game 6-1. Leading the way were Gateway College and Broom Leys Primary School (who were strongly supported by their very own team manager). Ashmount School, at their third WPC competition of the year, played to a couple of winning games. ESPO, having only recently signed up to the Workplace Challenge, showed strong determination throughout.

The semi-finals saw the tension heat up as teams battled it out to make the final. Gateway College suffered with one player sent off and subbed, and unfortunately were beaten to the post by University of Leicester.

On the other pitch Broom Leys, a player down as a penalty for not having a woman on their team, pushed past Voluntary Action Leicestershire to join the University in the final.

And in an exciting final, Broom Leys Primary school scored enough goals against University of Leicester to take the win.

Pictures from the event will soon be available on the Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport Facebook page.

Many thanks to all teams for taking part and thanks to Alex at Goals for organising the event and the two referees for ensuring the games went smoothly.

Head over to the Workplace Challenge website to book on to one or more of our next three competitions. Coming up in the next month or so is Female Friendly Netball, 'Awesome' Archery and Quidditch!
