Modernising a Traditional School Competition Offer

The Leicestershire County Netball Association has this year been awarded The John Buckingham Award for 'Developing School Sports Association', in recognition of their effort in developing the sport at secondary school level through the new Team Leicestershire model. This work has included creating a system where all schools are competing in local netball fixtures on a more regular basis and within a consistent calendar of dates. This has closed the gap between the Independent School and State School sectors, in terms of both participation opportunities and performance results. As a result, in the 2016/17 season every secondary school across Leicestershire, Leicester City and Rutland had access to a local schools' netball competition and two of the three County Champion sides were from State Schools.

This work will only continue to improve the standard of netball locally and will provide many young girls with new opportunities to become physically active and enjoy schools' netball.

"Team Leicestershire has revolutionised netball in schools. The majority of schools, state and independent are now taking part in properly organised netball competition which, within the framework of the rules of the game, can be facilitated to suit the geographical area. An increase of schools means more players which can only be good for the health and fitness of those students and eventually an increase of members joining our existing netball clubs." – Kathy Stripp, Chair of Leicestershire County Netball Association
