Run Leaders Promote Positive Mental Health

Leicester-Shire and Rutland's beginners running programme continues to grow and develop with over 50 groups currently operating across the area. The groups are led by a committed group of qualified volunteers who provide opportunities for over 1,000 participants every week.

During the year, a series of Run Leader Forums are organised to support volunteers carry out their role. In January, 19 Run Leaders attended personal development training that focussed on addressing mental health issues and role of an England Athletics Mental Health Ambassador. The forum also introduced the #runandtalk campaign which aims to support people experiencing mental health problems to be physically active through running.

Following the workshop, Leicestershire and Rutland's Running Activator Kim Angell had 6 individuals from clubs and groups approach her requesting to become Mental Health Ambassadors. A further 7 running groups committed to delivering activities during the #runandtalk campaign programme.

Kim said "I am really pleased with how well the Forum was received. The feedback from the Run Leaders was excellent and the positive action they have taken since the Forum has helped a number of people address mental health issues"
