It’s battle of the care homes in the Twilight Games Championships

The first Twilight Games Championships will be taking place at Parklands Leisure Centre in Oadby on Tuesday 11th September. The Championships is the first of its kind in Leicestershire and will be an opportunity for residents from care homes to come together to compete in different activities in a fun and social environment.

The competition follows the success of the Twilight Games initiative which has seen over 38 care homes across Leicester-Shire & Rutland being involved over the past 2 years. Although there has always been a competitive element to the programme, this is the first time that some of the care homes are coming together to compete.

The Twilight Games is a programme of adapted sports for residents in care settings with the objective of enhancing their day to day life through increased mobility, mental health and wellbeing and increased social activity.

Care homes within Leicester-Shire and Rutland have been taking part in the programme funded by the Leicestershire Community Foundation and Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport. The programme, delivered by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, involves providing the care homes with the necessary staff training, resources cards and equipment to enable them to feel confident in delivering the activities to their residents.

The Championships aims to compliment this programme by giving care homes involved the opportunity to come together to compete against each other with the hope of winning the Twilight Games Championship title!

The day will comprise of a competition format whereby the teams compete in the following sports: Boccia 7s, Sitting Volleyball and Audio Basketball. These are just 3 of the sports within the Twilight Games package – the other activities of Bean Bag Target and Skittles will be available to play whilst teams are having a break from competing.

Over lunch special guests have been invited including, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council Mr Ozzi O'Shea, to meet the teams, view further competitions and be part of the presentation ceremony at the end of the day.
