Older adult group - Getting Active

The older people's exercise group is open to people aged over 50 years. The group is designed to give older people a targeted fitness and fun session away from the pressures and concerns of mainstream groups that can put many people off.

The Macmillan Physical Activity group aims to provide support for people affected by cancer, alongside an opportunity to meet others in a relaxed setting to take part in activities on offer at the club. Both groups are heavily supported by the Hinckley and Bosworth Sport and Health Alliance.

2½ years ago, Peter sadly lost his wife. He did not regularly exercise due to time and family commitments. After his wife passed away, he was told by a friend about the Older Adult and Macmillan groups that run at Sport in Desford. Now, nearly 3 years on, Peter attends the sessions weekly and has introduced his brother and sister in law to the group. By attending the groups, Peter has developed a wider social circle whilst becoming fitter and healthier. He is now also a member of Sport in Desford's Bowls club, a sport he had never played, but was introduced to whilst at the older adults group.

"I really enjoy coming, everyone is just lovely and it's a good social activity. Initially I was apprehensive about attending, but it is just great."
