Charity celebrates future sports stars following 2018 School Games

More than 1,000 talented young athletes who competed at the UK's biggest youth multi-sports event could be propelled towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The School Games National Finals, delivered by children's charity the Youth Sport Trust, with National Lottery funding from Sport England and supported by National Governing Bodies of Sport and County Sports Partnerships, took place last weekend (30 to 2 September) at Loughborough University.

2018 School Games key stats:

  • 56% of the athletes were female
  • 13% had a disability (physical and/or learning)
  • 11% from BAME backgrounds.
  • The volunteer workforce was around 50% young people and included a significant proportion of volunteers with a disability.

New sports which were announced for the 2018 School Games included: Rowing, Canoeing, Netball, Triathlon and Laser Run.
