Ashmount School take their first win at the Workplace Wheelchair Basketball Competition

8 teams descended on Holywell Fitness Centre at Loughborough University on 24th January for the first Workplace Competition of 2019 – Wheelchair Basketball!

The 3-hour event saw the teams split into two groups where they would play each team in a round-robin style format.

Group 1
Youth Sport Trust
Loughborough University Enterprise Office
Ashmount School (B)
Charnwood Borough Council (A)

Group 2
Charnwood Borough Council (B)
Ashmount School (A)
Blaby District Council
Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport

After a warm-up first round, with a few baskets scored, the teams upped their game, with Youth Sport Trust, Charnwood Borough Council (A) and Ashmount School (A) storming ahead with 2 wins each, and a combined 26 points between them. In the meantime, Charnwood Borough Council (B) and Blaby District Council were battling out behind the top three, with a win and a loss each.

However the third and final round of games was the real decider - Charnwood Borough Council (A) lost their match against the Youth Sport Trust in a close game that finished 4 – 2 to Youth Sport Trust. Charnwood Borough Council (B) were also beaten, with Ashmount School (A) maintaining their winning streak. The final round also saw the organisers, Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport, score their one and only basket to finish in a draw against Blaby District Council.

Scores were totalled, and the winner was revealed - Youth Sport Trust and Ashmount School (A) were tied for 1st place. A decision was made to play a final match in which the winner would be decided by the first team to score a basket. All players put their game faces on, and with their B team cheering from the side-lines, Ashmount School (A) pushed on to take the winning basket. The final results were as follows:

1st Place – Ashmount School (A)

2nd Place – Youth Sport Trust

3rd Place – Charnwood Borough Council (A)

A huge thank you to all teams for their sportsmanship and enthusiasm, and to Ian Richards and Josh Longworth for helping the event to run smoothly.
