'Active Champions' 2020 Nominations - Hinckley & Bosworth Borough

GET READY to cast your nomination and help to find Hinckley & Bosworth's 'Active Champions' of 2020.

Unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic the traditional format of Hinckley & Bosworth's Local Sport and Health Alliance (LSHA) annual sports awards has had to be cancelled. However in recognition of all the hard work individuals, sports clubs, organisations and schools have undertaken to help others keep active and healthy particularly during lockdown are to be celebrated online. They just need your nominations!

Would you like to thank someone or a sports club/organisation/school for their support; recognise and celebrate their hard work during the pandemic. Has your gym instructor gone online and delivered a zumba, pilates or karate class via zoom? Has someone helped an older person keep active by joining them on a social distanced walk regularly? Do you know someone who has helped get their sports club started again once restrictions were lifted. Has a sports organisation and its members supported their local community? Does your school have a 'Joe Wicks' inspirational PE teacher or have you as an individual taken up a new sport and got the family to join in– Hinckley & Bosworth Council want to hear all those active health stories.

Nominations are needed for:

  • A sports club / organisation

A local club or organisation that has been creative in the way that they have reacted to the crisis. It may have been by helping out in the local community, starting new initiatives or projects, going virtual and hosting online classes to make sure members have been kept active and socially connected.

  • A school (primary or secondary)

That has taken part in the Leicestershire Rutland and Sport Virtual School Games Summer Championships, or creatively and inclusively supported its pupils helping them to stay well.

  • Individual

An individual who has achieved a personal goal and got themselves active or helped others to start taking part in physical activity, and continued to stay active, or may have volunteered in the local community during the pandemic.

Sue Houghton, Chair of Hinckley and Bosworth sport and health alliance

"I know that within Hinckley and Bosworth we have a great depth of talent that has really come to the fore and risen to the challenge of keeping sport running during the pandemic.

As a Sport and Health Alliance we want to celebrate this and acknowledge the great talent we have in the borough. However, we can only do this with your help in submitting nominations and encouraging your colleagues to do so as well."

Executive Member for Leisure at the Borough Council, Councillor Keith Nichols said: "The Sports Awards have been a key item in the council's calendar of events for the past 14 years but unfortunately due to the current restrictions around social distancing and with many sports and activities being put on hold for most of the year, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 awards in their normal format.

"However in recognition of all the good work going on in the community we would still like to recognise and thank all those who have creatively continued to help others stay active and healthy. I urge residents to tell us about their sporting heroes. There may not be an awards evening or individual prizes but in this extremely difficult year everyone is a winner but we can express our gratitude and highlight what is going on in the borough."

Nomination forms are available online here.

The closing date for all nominations is 4pm on Monday 23 November. All those nominated will receive a certificate and with permission will feature on the council's social media channels from early December.
