The School Games Summer Festival returned to Loughborough University on Friday 24th June for the first time since the Summer of 2019!
800 young people from across 55 schools throughout Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland came to take part in a range of competitive and non-competitive school sport and physical activity opportunities.
These activities ranged from County Finals in sports such as Netball, Hockey, Athletics and Sportsability, to celebration events for our Daily Boost, Change 4 Life, This Girl Can and County Leadership programmes.
The activities/sports opportunities that took place were:
- Quadkids Athletics - Year 3/4 and Year 5/6
- Quicksticks Hockey - Year 5/6
- Sportsability - Key Stage 2 Pan Disability
- Netball - Year 5/6
- Change 4 Life - Year 3/4
- This Girl Can Festival
- Year 7/8 Leadership Festival
- Daily Boost Festival
The Opening Ceremony kicked off the festival, with Thomas Estley Community College leading an energetic mass warm-up, after they won the Leicester-Shire & Rutland Dance Maynia competition to develop and film the warm-up routine.
Leicestershire born, England Rugby Centre Emily Scarratt MBE, who secured England's 2014 Women's World Cup triumph with six minutes left in the game, joined the Closing Ceremony to congratulate and present trophies to the winners. Emily spoke to the crowd about how she once represented Hinckley & Bosworth a few years ago and how pure enjoyment and hard work as got her to where she is today.
At the start of the 2021 / 22 academic year, in collaboration with our 8 School Sport & Physical Activity Networks, Active Together implemented a new approach to the delivery of our county wide school sport and physical activity offer. The 'Inspire – Develop - Excel model' seeks to support the wellbeing and development of ALL young people in LLR, and tackle inequalities through sport and physical activity. The event this year more accurately reflected this approach rather than the purely competitive sports event it has been in previous years.
A fantastic effort was shown by all, ranging from the young people participating and the young leaders and volunteers who supported the festival.
As well as some teams being crowned County Champions – ALL teams are also competing for the 'Spirit of the Games' Award in every event – for team's best representing the 'School Games Values' of Determination, Honesty, Passion, Respect, Self-Belief and Teamwork.
