Team Leicestershire: Girls Secondary Football Finals

Congratulations to every school that made it to the Team Leicestershire Girls Football County Finals which were on held at Judgemeadow Community College and Aylestone Park FC over the course of a week in May.

The first final to take place was the Y10/11 final which took place at Judgemeadow between Wigston Academy and Woodbrook Vale. Despite the unfavourable weather on the evening, both teams arrived in great spirits and showed fantastic determination from the first whistle. The early exchanges of the game were very even, both sides creating goal scoring opportunities but were denied by some high quality defending or goalkeeping. As the first half wore on, Wigston Academy took a grip of the game, mainly thanks to some great finishing from their attacking players which gave them a 3 goal lead at half time. Woodbrook Vale fought back hard in the second half, but were just lacking the final finish to some flowing moves. Wigston scored a fourth goal late on to seal the victory and claim the County Trophy.

The Year 7 and Year 8/9 finals took place the following week at Aylestone Park FC. Thankfully on this occasion we were treated to much better weather, and there was a really positive atmosphere created by all schools involved in their supporters. Following their warm ups, teams were led out onto the pitch by their captains before shaking hands on the pitch and having their team photographs taken.

In the Year 7 final two strong teams in South Charnwood High School and Countesthorpe Academy went head-to-head. Both teams approached the game with the right attitude, competing for every ball whilst demonstrating fantastic sportsmanship. The girls were cheered on by a large crowd too, which helped the players to raise their game. After taking an early lead through two neat finishes, Countesthorpe took a strong foothold in the game. However, South Charnwood never gave up, and were always in the match as it went into the second half. Eventually Countesthorpe added a third goal to clinch the win and become the new Year 7 Girls County Champions!

Finally, our Y8/9 final produced plenty of goals! South Charnwood High School battled hard and never let their heads drop despite Brockington looking to dominate the game. The quality of football on show from both teams was of a very high standard, and the match officials commented on the respect shown by both sets of players throughout the match, which should be applauded. Brockington found their shooting boots as the match went on, eventually winning the match by 11-2. We'd like to congratulate both teams for giving us a very entertaining final!

The final results were as follows;

Y7: South Charnwood High School 0– 3 Countesthorpe

Y8/9: Brockington College 11-2 South Charnwood High School

Y10/11: Woodbrook Vale 0-4 Wigston Academy

Many thanks to all the teachers and team managers for arranging and taking pupils to fixtures this season and particularly for bringing them along on finals night. Many thanks also go to Steve and Alan from the Leicestershire Schools Football Association and Aylestone Park FC for hosting us at this event! We'd also like to congratulate and thank all of the match officials who did an outstanding job too.

We hope everyone enjoyed the occasion and hopefully we will see you again soon at a future Team Leicestershire County Final event.
