A day volunteering at the Nottingham Robin Hood half marathon and mini marathon

I volunteered to help through an on-line form, and was then invited to go for a 2 hour training session a couple of weeks before race day. I was quite nervous about this, but it was really interesting seeing how a big event is organised. It was also lovely to meet all the other volunteers who all had different reasons for volunteering.

On the day, we had to get to the start of the marathon by 7.30am. We were given Race maker hoodies, high-viz tops and refreshment vouchers and then had a briefing as to what was expected of us. I was with 3 other volunteers, and we were supported by a team leader. Our role was essentially to do lots of cheering and clapping- (and a bit of dancing!) on the finish line. We also had to look out for people who were not so well on crossing the finish line, and stay with them until first aid arrived. The first aiders were stationed very close to the finish line, so this was not as scary as it sounds.

The first group of people to cross the line were those who had entered the mini marathon. This is a run, jog or walk of 1.5 miles. It's a great first goal to aim for if you're just getting into exercise. The crowd, and the volunteers, cheered every single person- from those who ran all the way, to those who walked with elderly relatives, or babies in pushchair. Everyone got a medal and a t-shirt and it was the best atmosphere. I am sure this event inspires many people each year to start being active.

After the "mini-marathoners" finished, the half marathon runners very quickly started to come across the finish line. Times ranged from just over an hour, to just over 4 hours to complete the race. People were running to break their own personal bests, or running for charity, or running with friends, family or colleagues and it was such a good feeling to support them all.

The day was great. It was so good seeing a huge cross section of people exercising together. People had big smiles on their faces, from their achievements and from the happy buzz that exercise gives you. I loved seeing all the families and friends together in the mini marathon and was in awe of the half marathon runners.

Volunteering is also a great way of getting active, getting fresh air and meeting new people. I certainly went home with a big smile on my face.
