Meet Sam

Sam boosted his self-esteem with his new-found love for fitness.

Sam's Story | North West Leicestershire

Over the past 2 years, Sam has gone on a journey to vastly improve his physical and mental wellbeing. Sam has suffered with eczema since he was born and this became something he was very self-conscious about at college, resulting in feelings of anxiety. After this negative experience, Sam started to look to other people with eczema, and started to eat healthier, preparing his meals and generally improving his diet. He also started to become much more active at the gym and with the help of a friend, became much more confident in how he looked.

Sam wants to help other people who may have been through something similar, or don't have a lot of confidence about their body, to become fitter, healthier and to have their self-esteem boosted. Sam believes there is not "one way and that's it", he become more confident in seeking other social opportunities such as football, touch rugby, and home fitness. He still suffers with anxiety, but really appreciates the value of being active in helping manage this.

Who is your biggest inspiration/role model?

My biggest inspiration and role models are my parents. I'm also hugely fond of Anne Wafula-Strike and Rose Ayling-Ellis for their work in the world of disability awareness. Also Laura Adlington on Bake Off is an inspiration to me as well as she has Dyspraxia like me and has taken part in a show where she has embraced challenges.

What is your favourite place to be active and why?

My favourite place to be active is the AstroTurf where I play football every Monday as I am able to interact with other people and build connections whilst being active.

For you, what is the best by-product of being active?

The best by-product of being active for me is the confidence it gives me to try different activities I would've been apprehensive about in the past and would now have a go at due to feeling more body confident.

What is your one top tip for others looking to be more active?

My tip for others looking to be active is to be as open-minded as possible when it comes to doing exercise. Trying new things shows a positive attitude.
