Samantha's Story | North West Leicestershire
Samantha would describe herself as one of those 'lockdown fitness' people. Prior to the pandemic, she wouldn't even run for a bus. However, when we were forced into lockdown, Sam decided to start the Couch to 5k. As an anxiety sufferer, it was such a hard time, and she knew she needed to do something to help alleviate the symptoms. Sam quickly progressed with the programme, and then moved on to doing lots of online classes such as boxercise, HIIT and resistance training. As a single mother of 3 children aged 8, 7 and 5, this was not always an easy task. She could often be found training in the living room with a child crawling on my back whilst planking, or trying to stop them picking up the barbell!
The love for exercise just continued, and in December 2020 Sam had the idea to qualify as a personal trainer. Her motivation for this was that she knew there were so many people out there who were like me. Nervous about a traditional gym environment, stretched for time, worried that they wouldn't fit in. She just knew she could change someone's life. She signed up for an online course on 4th January, the day they shut the schools. Sam describes doing that course and home-schooling 3 children as possibly one of the hardest periods of her life. She was getting up at 6am to either work or exercise, then trying to study whilst teaching the children. It all paid off and in May 2021 'Village Green Fitness' was born. Sam is proud to say that her dream came true, and she is now responsible for a community of women who are all getting active in ways they never thought they would, where even the most nervous of beginners are coming back week on week.
Sam believes that because she can relate so much to other mums about the fears and challenges of being active, she can use her own experiences to inspire them. She is very passionate about empowering these women, and her farm classes are something they all love. There is nothing more rewarding than smashing a tyre with a sledgehammer!

Who is your biggest inspiration/role model?
My clients. These women (and some men) are pushing through their own barriers to keep active, pushing right out of their comfort zone and smashing it week in, week out.
Where is your favourite place to be active and why?
Slightly biased but Cattows Farm. I love training outdoors and the scenery is incredible.
For you, what is the best by-product of being active?
The boost to my mental health. I know that if I am struggling, keeping active will help put me in a better place and get the endorphins flowing.
What is your one top tip for others looking to be more active?
It is a marathon not a sprint. Decide on one small change that you can stick to, and when you've mastered that, make another small change. Pretty soon you will have transformed your whole life.
