About Croxall Lakes
The site is part managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, which oversaw the restoration of the large western lake. The site has been developed as a nature reserve, with focus on wetland habitats for birds, mammals and invertibrates. Migrant and wintering wildfowl and waders such as goosander, wigeon, smew and lapwing use the site.
The River Mease is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its populations of otters, native white-clawed crayfish and spined loach. The bank is being managed to benefit these species and public access is therefore not permitted to the river bank. The grassland is being grazed under Countryside Stewardship to improve the species diversity and provide habitat for lapwing, snipe and other ground nesting birds.
