About Eland Wood

A 21ha Tender Scheme winner for the Duchy of Lancaster in 2000, Eland Wood is a gateway site in the Needwood Forest area of The National Forest.

The scheme was designed to restore the parkland landscape of the area, with areas of individual and small clumps of caged trees as well as denser planting blocks. A large amount of open ground has been left to support an exisiting curlew population. Tall shelters are used on the broadleaf species to prevent damage by fallow deer, which are common in the surrounding woodlands.

Local schools helped to plant some of the plots, which will in turn act as educational resources in the future.

The cross country horse riding course was designed by top eventer Ian Stark, and is available on a permanent basis (details available from Eland Lodge).
