I really want to cycle, are the roads too busy?

Where will you go?

You want to cycle but are worried about the roads? A fair question that can be answered and get you out there with confidence.

We can all be off road, perhaps it is exclusively offroad like the Great Central Way in Leicester, the Tissington Trail in Derbyshire or the Brampton Valley Way. 'Let's Get Moving' there, perhaps on a hire bike for an hour, or on our own for a picnic lunch or café stop. Fosse Meadows on a sunny day is very special.

What happens on the commute or going to the shops? Do we need to be brave? Ride on the footpath? Not really. Riding on the road got much safer last year (despite all the shouting on social media.)

The Highway Code January 2022 put in lots of rules based on vulnerability.

Pedestrians come first, then cyclists, horses, cars, vans and HGVs. If you are bigger you look after everyone below you. HGV drivers, thanks! (Really they are the best).

Most people now are aware of having to pass wide at 1.5m or else wait behind until you can.

By positioning yourself appropriately in the road you can help other road users stay honest and pass you correctly. The Highway code is online. Passing information is Rule 72, but there is lots for everyone and it is worth a read. The Bikeability scheme teaches Year 5 and 6 children about this. (Others too). It is magical watching them learn this and other road users respecting this. Have a look at https://www.bikeability.org.uk/

By planning your route you can get around difficult bits of your journey. Even Google Maps has a cycle tab to help you. You can always push your bike a bit if you are nervous. Honestly the reason you don't see a lot of cyclists on really busy roads is because they found a more interesting route.

And when we have to share the road, (because we have equal rights, no one pays for access to the King's Highway), you can explore on the National Cycle Routes. NCR 63 goes from Leicester to Oakham and Rutland Water through lovely countryside. They are quiet, well signposted and feel like motorways for bikes. Find these at https://www.sustrans.org.uk/ Look out for the signs.

The best start for many is to ride with a friend and practice the route, perhaps on a weekend. Once you've done it the first time you remember where to go and get used to other road users. Many councils have a cycle buddy scheme to help at the start. Help out a volunteer cyclist! Make them feel wanted!

There are many cyclists who will delight in helping you get out and about. You will save money, be greener, be healthier and wonder why you never did it before.

So Lets Get Moving!
