Meet Demelza

Demelza became active to overcome her health issues

Demelza from Leicester City

Demelza has never driven a car, and so she's always been active, walking wherever she could. Demelza unfortunately developed health issues in 2018, which meant over the following years she was regularly in and out of hospital and struggled to manage her day-to-day symptoms. She had lost her strength, fitness, and overall joy in life.

After eventually being able to get moving again, Demelza started going on regular long walks, and slowly began to build her confidence back up again. By chance, she found the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre, and joined in with one of their women groups. Since 2021, she has found a new lease of life, and enjoys new ways taking care of her body.

Through the group, Demelza has learned how to paddleboard and kayak, as well as also enjoying cycling, abseiling, ziplining and open water swimming activities! She's made some great friends along the way and encourages anyone looking to be active to start in a group environment.

Demelza never considered that physical activity could be fun, but will now look for any excuse to go paddleboarding, whatever the weather conditions! Although her health conditions haven't fully gone away, she uses physical activity as a way to deal with the symptoms, and adapts each activity session to suit her and her body.
