Sophie Smith Completes an Unbeaten Season

Sophie Smith (14), from Slawston, Leicestershire ended the 2015 Pony Racing Season on a high, winning the Leading Pony Award after finishing the Charles Owen Racecourse Series unbeaten. Sophie and her pony Push the Button went into the Charles Owen Final at the end of October with 9 wins from 9 races and were firm favourites to take the 138m Final.

Aintree Racecourse kindly hosted the final alongside their Countryside day and were treated to two fantastic finals both needing photo finishes to decide the winner, but it was Leicestershire's Sophie who crossed the line first to win her 10th race this season, remaining unbeaten.

Pony Racing was formalised in 2004 and is a great opportunity to get young people involved in horseracing as well as producing the future workforce and new stars of the future, with many of the young riders like Sophie not coming from a racing background.

Sophie will no doubt be inspired to follow in the footsteps of Pony Racing Graduate Tom Marquand who has been shortlisted in the top 3 for BBC Young Sports Personality Award after winning the 2015 Stobart Apprentice Title one year after competing on the Pony Racing Circuit.
