Helping Communities to be Active

Helping communities to get moving has many benefits, these may include improving health and wellbeing, reducing isolation and loneliness, providing positive activities and creating support networks.

Communities can come in all shapes and sizes and mean different things to different people, for example it could be a neighbourhood, a workplace or a group of people. There are many groups, organisations and individuals that work in and support communities – these can play an important part in getting people and leading a healthier lifestyle.

The information below will support groups, workplaces, care settings and individuals to creative active and healthy communities.

The Get Active Search Engine helps local residents find a range of physical activity, sport and wellbeing opportunities across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, including clubs/groups, parks/open spaces and activity sessions near them. Ensure you are promoting your organisation and opportunities by visiting our 'Promote your Club/Organisation/Venue page'.

The Active Together (Campaign) Supporter's Hub is there for organisations to access and utilise branded assets, alongside their own, to collectively encourage more people across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland to become active.

We have a role to support local healthcare professionals to learn more about how physical activity can make a difference, improve people's lives and our Active Medicine section signposts to local information and opportunities to support this.

The places we live, work, learn and play all have a crucial role in influencing our activity levels. Our Active Places section provides dedicated support through the new Healthy Placemaking website (coming soon) for planning authorities and developers and support for Schools and Organisations.

Twilight Games

The Twilight Games is a programme of adapted sports for residents in care settings with the objective of enhancing their day to day life through increased mobility, mental health and wellbeing and increased social activity.

Care homes within Leicester-Shire and Rutland have been taking part in the programme funded by the Leicestershire Community Foundation and Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport. The programme, delivered by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, involves providing the care homes with the necessary staff training, resources cards and equipment to enable them to feel confident in delivering the activities to their residents.
