Care Home Residents set to compete in the 'Twilight Games'

To celebrate the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games and to allow for our older generation to feel involved, residents in a number of care settings across Leicestershire and Rutland have been involved in the 'Twilight Games'.

Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS) have developed a programme of activity which enables our older generation in care settings, to participate whatever their level of ability and mobility.

The specially adapted games are aimed at assisting people with their co-ordination, concentration and mobility but above all to have fun and enjoy the social and wellbeing benefits of being active with others.

Not only have the care homes been active but they have also embraced the cultural aspects of the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In Melton, residents at Gretton Court and St Johns have been busy making their own Olympic themed crafts, flags and bunting in order to decorate the lounge to create a great atmosphere for their very own sporting event – The Twilight Games!

The local care settings that have been involved are:

  • Gretton Court and St Johns – Melton
  • Oakhouse Residential Home – Rutland
  • Moat House Care Home & Parkhouse Grange – Hinckley & Bosworth
  • Longcliffe Nursing Home – Charnwood

Each care setting will undertake the games in a competitive and spirited manner throughout the week of 15th-19th August. They will take part in activities such as Sitting Volleyball, Bean Bag Throw, Petanque, Mini Boccia and Audio Basketball.

After all the Twilight Games have taken place, the results will be announced on Monday 22nd August, with a Presentation arranged at the winning care home at a later date, when the team will be presented with the inaugural 'Twilight Games' Shield!
