Sport England: updated advice on making a planning application

Sport England have released their five-step Making a Planning Application guidance to support community clubs in understanding how to navigate the planning process.

The guide helps clubs better understand the planning application process and is relevant for those considering replacement or enhancement of sports facilities, building new sports facilities, relocating or holding temporary or permanent events.

The planning system can appear daunting and complex to club members who are new to overseeing such projects however, by understanding the planning process at the outset, clubs can avoid potential pitfalls as they seek to deliver their development aspirations. The guide's five-step process breaks down the considerations and action needed to help:

  • Review the options available,
  • Prepare an application,
  • Submit an application,
  • Understand the decision-making process,
  • Implement a permission.

The guide can be accessed online via this link.

Clubs undertaking such projects can also contact our Sports Facilities Development Officer, Joe Hall (j.hall@lrsport.org), for further support and advice on how to get started.
