Local school in world top 10 for 5k Challenge

East Leake school Brookside took part in the World 5k Challenge earlier this month, and are currently ranked 10th in the world!

The international competition is for those aged between 7-11, with at least 10 competitors running five times over a 100m distance. The revolutionary event sees teams from across the globe compete simultaneously, making it a live event from throughout the entire planet.

The school have recently been stepping up their focus on sport and keeping physically active. Having taken part in 'Run to Rio', each pupil took it upon themselves to run every day for 10 weeks, completing a combined total of 5,815 minutes. As the name suggests, that is the equivalent distance between East Leake and the Brazilian capital.

The event on 5th October was made even more special, with a race arch kindly donated by Ian Penrose. This year's effort saw a number of teams in the school take part, with one team smashing the previous year's record. 2015 saw a best time of 17:18 for the kilometres, however this year saw that time smashed with an incredible 15:27.

The challenge doesn't isolate those not wanting to take part however. Roles such as team manager and time keeper allow everyone in the school to get involved and help to make the challenge a success.
