Inspiring older athletes recognised at Feel Alive From 65 Celebration

Some of the most inspiring older people in the region were on show at Imago Loughborough, as they came together for the Feel Alive From 65 Celebration Evening.

Running after another successful campaign week in September, the evening celebrated those who continue to stay physically active despite health conditions and age standing in their way. There were a number of awards presented throughout the evening, with Team GB rower Jonny Walton on hand to congratulate all those who were nominated.

All nominees had their names put forward by people they have had a positive effect on, whether that be family, friends or activity leaders. The 90 minute celebration, organised by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, saw eight award categories hail the very best that Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland has to offer. This included triathletes, runners and dancers, all of whom left the audience in awe.

As well as celebrating those who have stayed physically active throughout their life, the evening also saw some remarkable stories told from those who have only recently got active. One of the stand out stories came from Barry Palmer, whose incredible determination saw him lose 10st, seeing him recognised as the winner of the Referral Scheme Award.

The final award of the evening was presented to 95 year old Frank Booth, recognised for his incredible tenacity and determination with the Oldest Athlete Award. Other awards in the evening went to: Alan Taylor, Houghton on the Hill Community Group, Virsen Chauhan, Thurmaston Games Morning Group, Active 65+ Zumba and Firdous Begum Ahmad.

The night was finished by local star Walton, who spoke of his experiences in Rio this summer and his aspirations for Tokyo in four years' time. He was even on hand to make the photo opportunities that bit more special too.
