Active Communities Project

Active Charnwood worked in partnership with Fusion Lifestyle, the Supporting Leicestershire Families team, local care and residential providers to develop a successful Inclusive Games project. The project aimed to develop a programme of low intensity games and encourage carers, community support workers and volunteers to lead and deliver physical activity sessions
within their existing settings.

The Active Charnwood team supported carers, support workers and volunteers for a 6-8 week period. Initially the team led by example, taking inclusive games and equipment out to residential settings and delivering low intensity sessions. As the weeks progressed, carers and workers were supported and mentored to deliver the activity themselves. The project offered residents something a little different to their daily routines and the sessions were fun, interactive and sometimes competitive.

We have successfully delivered 5 sessions and engaged with 72 participants and had 291 attendances. The project will continue to educate carers and support workers by offering a 3 hour Inclusive Games workshop in-conjunction with a Seated Physical Activity Course. To date, 8 staff from the Active Charnwood team and partners have attended the training.

"It is so lovely to see everyone engaged, stimulated and having so much fun as a group during the activities. They really enjoy seeing Fran (Inclusive Games Activator) and learning new games. It brings back memories from those who played sport in the past which they then start to talk about as a group. This has been so beneficial to us all."
