School Games Sports Hall Athletics

On the 30th of March we held both the Primary and Secondary School Games Sports Hall Athletics event in the Netball Centre at Loughborough University. It was an amazing day and all schools involved help to create a fantastic atmosphere for participants to develop, enjoy and improve their skills.

The Sportshall Primary Programme provides an exciting and highly popular introduction to athletics competition. School teams consist of a minimum of 9 girls and 9 boys, with a maximum of 15 girls and 15 boys being permitted. They may compete in a maximum of two track and two field events. There were a wide range of activities taking place, including various obstacle and lap relays on the track, whilst in the field events there was chest push, speed bounce, standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump and soft javelin. It was fantastic to see everyone was giving it their all and enjoying themselves. Hopefully lots of the participants got to try a new athletic activity they hadn't experienced before and maybe it's something they'd like to try doing again!

The Sportshall Secondary Programme offers an ideal format for competition in which young people may develop their skills ahead of the track and field season. The secondary event is divided into 4 competitions, splitting participants into boys and girls and year 7 and year 8. They may then compete in a maximum of three track and two field events, with track activities ranging from individual lap races to team relays, whilst in the field the shot event was added.

It was great to see the support, encouragement and cheering that everyone had for their teammates back in the seats. This was something our young leaders were keeping an eye on throughout the competition, as well as the many other School Games Values to determine who would be awarded the 'Spirit of the Games' award. We also had 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals for each age group.
