Planting seedlings when appropriate; maintaining vegetable plot by staking, weeding and watering; learning how to harvest different vegetables; learning the right time to plant and harvest different vegetables; helping from time to time to spread manure, compost etc. In short, learning all the different skills needed to grow veg on a small plot of land.
Skills/Equipment Required:
No skills required - instruction will be given. Bring gardening gloves - all other tools can be provided
Fitness Level Required:
Depends on the activity at the time, the volunteer does not have to do more than seems suitable to their fitness level, but a fair amount of kneeling and bending may be required
What to Wear and Bring:
bring old clothes which it doesn't matter if they get dirty. bring gardening gloves and water to drink, and snacks, etc. Sturdy footwear must be worn
Duration of Each Session:
One to two hours or as long as the volunteering would like to give
Frequency of Sessions:
We are there every week on Tuesday evening but attendance does not need to be every week and for occasional activities work groups or several volunteers are needed
Access Considerations:
the site is wheelchair accessible but most activity is at floor level. Limited access to toilets, it would mean walking to the nearest pub
Risks:
Slips, trips, falls. generally very low, care needed with sharp tools and with kneeling and bending and lifting
Additional Comments:
No DBS or reference needed - preferably over 18 years of age.
