About Cycle Mechanic

We are excited to be recruiting a Cycle Mechanic here in Barnsley, the place of possibilities, and help us to deliver our cycling and active travel ambitions encouraging our residents to cycle for work, travel or leisure.

Why should you consider working for Barnsley Council?

We are a double award winning, high-performing council with a growing economy, a thriving town centre and some truly impressive outcomes in our communities. This is why we've been awarded Council of the Year for 2023 by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) and The Municipal Journal (MJ).

Our Sport & Physical Activity Team is committed to supporting the people of Barnsley to be more active for improved physical and mental health. A key element of how we encourage everyone to be more active is how we build physical activity into everyday life.

It is an exciting time to join the team and support our cycling and active travel offer. We're looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, committed and friendly Cycle Mechanic to help deliver our new Active Travel Hub based in the town centre, and our mobile Active Travel Unit visiting businesses and communities across the borough.

In your role as Cycle Mechanic, you will:

Support the development and operational delivery of active travel hub, and the mobile active travel hub and their services which include:

  • Advice and support to the public
  • Support community engagement
  • Support our cycle and e-cycle loan scheme
  • Support our secure cycle parking operations
  • Deliver Bike servicing and Dr Bike checks
  • Support bike recycling and deployment
  • Supporting Marketing and communications
  • Work closely with others in the Sport & Physical Activity Team to support our walk, cycle and active travel offer in schools, workplaces, and communities.

About You

  • You will have a relevant level 4 qualification, or relevant cycle mechanic qualification (e.g., Cytech), or be able to demonstrate extensive equivalent experience.
  • You will have experience of working in a cycle servicing environment, cycle fleet management or cycle delivery setting.
  • You are flexible in your approach and are committed to helping more people to cycle in Barnsley.
  • You will have experience dealing with customers and the public to create a welcoming and positive experience for them.

Please make sure you view the job profile for this role, as you will need to demonstrate how you meet the required criteria in your application form. We operate a flexible approach to service delivery so this role will have some variable shift patterns and occasional weekend work, which is applicable to all the Sport & Physical Activity Team. We are really keen to speak to anyone thinking about applying so we can answer any questions and provide more information for this exciting opportunity.

We would always encourage anyone that is interested in our posts to get in touch to discuss the role and for us to answer any questions you may have. Please contact adamsimmonite@barnsley.gov.uk to arrange a discussion.
