GO GOLD Athlete of the Week: William Bell

William Bell is the latest athlete to be featured as part of our weekly GO GOLD coverage.

Having picked up six golds from six races over the Bank Holiday weekend, he revealed to Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport all about his ambitions and challenges.

1. What's the best thing that your sport has enabled you to do?

Last year I was selected to represent Leicester City as part of a team of 8, at the International Children's Games hosted by New Taipei City, Taiwan. Not only was it my first international meet but I had never travelled so far in my life before. It was amazing to experience the culture of the City and to swim against young people from all over the world. I had great fun with my team and came home with personal best times, medals and great memories.

2. If you were stuck in a lift for the day, who would you want with you?

Peter Kay, Ed Sheeran and a celebrity chef with a full picnic basket!

3. What is your biggest goal?

To stand on the podium at the Olympics representing Great Britain.

4.What has been your biggest challenge in swimming?

Regaining my fitness this long course season after emergency abdominal surgery before Christmas 2016. It was such a shock to end up in hospital when I should have been competing at the short course Nationals and attending the England Phase 2 camp. I had 5 weeks out of the water followed by shortened sessions for 2 weeks so there was work to do if I wanted to swim well at the British Trials in April. Pleased to report all went well at the Trials with PB's posted on rankings.

5. What is your ideal holiday destination?

Anywhere hot and sunny by the coast, with great food and free WiFi!

6. Do you have anything else that you'd like us to know?

I really enjoy basketball. I play for my school team, Rawlins Academy and enjoy watching Leicester Riders play live at their new stadium. If I had more free time, I would play more, but it's hard with swimming and school.
