GO GOLD athletes amongst 14 local athletes in National School Games

A number of GO GOLD athletes will be taking part at the National School Games, which starts today.

Ben Higgins, Alex Haines, Olivia Back, Michaella Glenister & William Bell will all take part in their respective sports, with several more local athletes all preparing for the pinnacle of youth sport in Britain.

Last year saw Loughborough University host the Games and it's back from today, with the sporting stars of the future set to battle it out on behalf of their areas.

The full list of athletes competing from Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland:

Athletics

  • Ben Higgins, Langham, 16, 400m hurdles and sprint - GO GOLD
  • Kyle Calhoun, Leicester, 16, sprinter
  • Karim Chan, Coalville, 16, long jump (para-athlete), gold medal at the 2017 World Para-Athletics Junior Champs
  • Daniel Maud, Rothley, 16, 1500m

Cycling

  • Alex Haines, Loughborough, 16, silver medal in 2017 Ulster Road Race and Ulster TT Championships - GO GOLD
  • Alec Gregory, Quorn, 15, 2016 champion of national series mtb race and national series cross race 2016
  • Finn Mansfield, Wymeswold, 16, PB 10 mile TT 23:26

Hockey

  • Olivia Back, Rearsby, 17, has played for England u18 - GO GOLD

Rugby 7s

  • Phoebe Andrews, Whissendine, 16, in the England talent development squad

Swimming

  • Michaella Glenister, Loughborough, 15 - GO GOLD
  • Will Bell, Loughborough, 15, British Summer Champs 2016 - 8 PB's, 4 golds, 3 silvers. 4 Leicestershire records - GO GOLD
  • Levi Codling, Ashby de la Zouch, 13
  • Charlie Poole, Leicester, 16, competed in the International Childrens Games in Taipei in 2016

Wheelchair Basketball

  • Elliot Hardman, Melton Mowbray, 15, plays for Central Midlands and Leicester Cobras First
