Active Together - Golf Sixes Pilot Event

On the 8th of June, Active Together piloted a Golf Sixes event in partnership with the Golf Foundation at Beedles Lake Golf Club in East Goscote.

Several Secondary Schools from across the county attended the event and enjoyed playing on the par 3 golf course. Short GolfSixes is an exciting format of golf competition for beginner to intermediate players, including those learning the sport that can be delivered as part of the schools activity and within a local/county cluster area across Secondary Schools. It has been developed to incorporate all the exciting, fun and team elements of golf in a school's competitive format. Pupils play 6 shorter holes of golf in around 90 minutes.

Each of the 6 players play their tee shot from the 'tee', then the team must decide on the 1 best shot from those 6 played. This is normally determined by the best positioned golf shot, the longest and straightest shot. The decided ball is the only stroke that is counted. Once the team has decided which ball to play, the players with the weaker shot picks up their ball and place it within 10cm of the best placed ball and then players will each play their shot. Again, the only strokes to count are the 1 shot out of the 6 that are chosen and taken. This process process applies for every shot until one of the balls from the team drops in the hole. The score for the holes is recorded as the number of strokes taken on that hole to get the ball into the hole. The overall winning team is the team with the lowest number of strokes scored over the 6 holes.

Helped by lovely weather conditions, teachers and pupils all feedback that they had enjoyed the format and the opportunity to play golf with their friends alongside other schools. We are hoping to build on the success of this pilot event, by providing further opportunities for schools to play competitive golf in this format again next year.

A big thank you to Stacey McNicholas from the Golf Foundation for all of her hard work in helping to put the day together, as well as Beedles Lake for hosting us. Thank you to all the staff and pupils from Anstey Martin, Redmoor and Orchard Mead Schools for being involved.

Any schools wishing to discuss opportunities to get involved with schools golf in Leicestershire and Rutland can contact Matt Hackfath (Sport Development Officer at Active Together), via m.hackfath@active-together.org.
