School Games: KS3 & KS4/5 Parallel Sportshall Athletics

The School Games returned for the first Level 3 final of the year as athletes from across Leicestershire and Rutland came to take compete in the Parallel Sportshall Athletics finals at Aylestone Leisure Centre in early December. The School Games provide development opportunities for young people to enjoy taking part in sport and physical activity whilst growing key skills such as confidence, self-belief, and determination.

Teams had secured their place at this event by qualifying from a Level 2 event and were all hoping to be crowned this year's county champions. Thank you and congratulations to everyone that took part, it was great to see so many aspiring young athletes competing in a variety of athletics events, including the high-stepper, speed bounce, soft javelin, and the target throw.

The points individual athletes amassed at each event then counted towards an overall team score. Following the individual events, there were also some scoring relays as well as some fun races which involved going under and over a variety of equipment! As well as the competition itself, there was also the Spirit of the Games Award up for grabs, for the teams demonstrating those all-important School Games Values throughout the event. There was lots of fantastic support and encouragement for everyone throughout the event, as well as examples of honesty, respect, and passion.

The results were as follows;

KS3 competition:

  1. North Charnwood
  2. West Leicester
  3. Oadby and Wigston
  4. East Leicteser
  5. North West Leicester
  6. Rutland
  7. Melton & Belvoir
  8. Blaby & Harborough

Spirit of the Games Winners: Rutland

KS4/5 competition:

  1. North West Leicester
  2. East Leicester
  3. Melton & Belvoir
  4. Blaby & Harborough

Many thanks to the Inspire Together team and the Leicestershire Disability Athletics Development Group for all their hard work in organising and running the event. Thank you to Aylestone Leisure Centre for hosting the event, as well as all the staff who brought teams along and supported throughout the day.

We hope everyone enjoyed the finals and hopefully we will see you again soon at a future School Games event.
