Summer arrives just in time for the School Games Summer Championships

The Championships started with the Opening Ceremony and featured an outstanding dance routine to the Greatest Showman soundtrack performed by Sketchley Hill Primary School.

Compere BBC Radio Leicester's Ian Stringer and special guest Ben Higgins, 400m hurdler from Rutland and GO GOLD Ambassador introduced the mascot race between 'Charlie Fox' from Leicestershire County Cricket Club, 'Zoom' from the Daily Boost programme, 'Dazzle' the School Games mascot and 'Spike' the alien from Learning South Leicestershire School Sports Partnership. It was a close race with 'Zoom' soaring through to the finish line just in time.

An awe-inspiring freestyle football routine from world record holder Dan Magness, bursting with crowd pleasing stunts and tricks concluded the Opening Ceremony.

The sun continued to shine as athletes set off for a competitive day of action in Quadkids Athletics, Kwik Cricket, Quicksticks Hockey, Netball, Sportsability, Swimming, Tri-Golf and the Change 4 Life Festival.

The atmosphere across the disciplines was buzzing as athletes cheered on their team mates as they competed.

As results from the individual competitions began to filter in, the athletes gathered once again for the Closing Ceremony with BBC Radio Leicester's Ian Stringer and were joined by Ben Higgins, 400m hurdler from Rutland and GO GOLD Ambassador and world record holding free style footballer Dan Magness.

Results for each discipline were announced and trophies presented to the Champions and Spirit of the Games winners of each competition, and medals given out to Gold, Silver and Bronze medallist teams.

Liam Drake, Sports Development Officer at Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport reflected on the day:

"The day was a fantastic celebration of school sport competition and participation. Whilst winning is a great feeling, we also saw some fantastic examples of the School Games values and the lifelong skills that sport can provide such as teamwork, resilience, respect, friendship and a positive attitude towards a healthy and active lifestyle."

Ben Higgins highlighted how important the School Games Summer Championships are for young athletes:

"It's been a great atmosphere, there's a load of parents, teachers and everyone's getting involved. It's a great opportunity for the kids to go out and express themselves in sport."

The Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games, now in its eighth year, is part of the national 'School Games Programme'. It aims to keep competitive sport at the heart of schools and provide more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.
